In our local paper, somewhere between which Colorado city is the “highest” in North America and news on a local teacher that is in A LOT of trouble, there was a refreshing story about our local homeless situation.
The Springs Rescue Mission is looking forward to a new look, which will include more room for their New Life Program for “men struggling with homelessness or substance abuse” in the Colorado Springs area. The Rescue Mission is now 10 years old and is in need of more space for their programs. Currently the men are housed in a couple local hotels and homes, near the Mission.
If all goes as planned, there will be a new 8,000 s.f. facility with a new 3 building campus in the S/W part of downtown Colorado Springs, capable of housing 50 men. There are not many complaints regarding this plan, as the Rescue Mission already is in good standing with the neighboring businesses and homes, and that “good standing” is not expected to change with the new facilities.
With the help of local Homeward Pikes Peak, they are hoping to have this all completed within the next 18 months. This is a great step in the right direction, regarding our homeless population.
